Supported Independent Living (SIL) is designed to provide disability support to NDIS participants that enables you to live independently as far as is possible. The aim is also to provide appropriate support to help you develop new skills and capacity, regardless of whether you are living in your own home or, as is more likely in the case of SIL, in shared accommodation with other NDIS participants.

Memba Care is an in home care Brisbane specialist which also supports SIL clients to establish and maintain connections with the local community, both through undertaking daily living activities and participating in social events, all the while encouraging and promoting clients’ ongoing health and wellbeing.

Benefits of Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Our Supported Independent Living services are intended to make it possible for NDIS participants to remain in their own (or a shared) home, rather than having to reside full time with family members or in a care facility, and to live independently to the greatest extent they possibly can.

SIL care can also be provided for NDIS participants who have higher level support needs, and require ongoing assistance at home, including 24/7 care and overnight support.

How does SIL support NDIS participants?

SIL is an important component of the NDIS, as it means participants can enjoy greater independence and exercise more choice and control over their own lives, while at the same time ensuring they are provided with support for everyday tasks that they would not otherwise be able to accomplish on their own.

Using their SIL budget, participants can pay for a support worker to assist them with these regular daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, household tasks, and taking part in community and social activities.

With your support coordinator, you will also organise when the most appropriate time is for your support worker to provide services (or whether they should stay overnight), all of which will be detailed in your roster of care.

Our support workers are professional and highly trained, and offer compassionate care along with assisting you to develop skills you need to enjoy a full and independent life. We are committed to providing the highest level of care, whether for a few hours a day, overnight stays, or 24/7 care, and we can help you to find and maintain appropriate accommodation that will let you exercise the maximum possible control and choice over your lifestyle and living arrangements.

Working with a support coordinator

If you have Supported Independent Living funding as part of your NDIS plan, you will also generally have funding to pay for a support coordinator. Your coordinator’s role is to help you select appropriate supports and determine how they align with your individual goals, and then develop a roster of care submission, which is submitted to the NDIA to determine the reasonable and necessary supports to which you will be entitled.

The aim of SIL funding is to pay for a support worker who will help you to undertake daily living activities that you would not otherwise be capable of, and can include things like personal care e.g, bathing, dressing and hygiene, as well as meal preparation.

However, if it is determined that SIL isn’t right for you, a support coordinator can help you to access any other funding for which you might be eligible.
